What Can I Say?

"Abortion is a decision between a woman and her doctor. Everyone has the constitutional right to privacy."

We are here for you.

Ever heard this attempt to legitimize abortion? Here are three quick points you can respond with:

1.  The truth is that the right to privacy is not found in the United States Constitution. Despite this, in 1973 the Supreme Court elevated it as a right higher than an unborn child's right to live.  Pro-lifers understand privacy as a societal right, but not an absolute right - it is always governed by a hierarchy of rights.  Spousal abuse or animal cruelty can't be defended on the grounds that it was done in the privacy of one's own home. Killing done privately is no less destructive than killing in public.

2.  The advice of a doctor doesn't change the nature, consequences, or morality of abortion, especially of those doctors who will personally profit from the abortion. A doctor's moral opinion is not always as sound as his or her medical opinion. That doctors are capable of profoundly immoral decisions is demonstrated by the German doctors during WWII who participated in the gruesome experiments on unwanted people. Dr. Leon Alexander, a psychologist at the Nuremburg War Crimes Trials, commented on the Nazi doctors involved in the barbaric medical experiments on prisoners. He wrote, "The beginnings were at first a shift in emphasis in the basic attitude of the physicians. It started with the acceptance of the attitude, based in the euthanasia movement, that there is a such a thing as a life not worthy to be lived."

3.  The father of the child also bears responsibility for the child, and should have a part in the decision.  We've created a double standard in our lost-fatherhood society - we expect a man to take responsibility for the new life he helped create, and assist financially and emotionally. Yet he only hears that his opinion does not count, that he has no place in the decision regarding the child's fate - and in fact, legally he has none, even if he wishes that his child be granted life. Consider also: abortion permits and even encourages men to sexually exploit women without taking responsibility. They can hand over the money and destroy any child they father.  Abortion "rights" only bring out the worst in men.  Pro-lifers encourage both mother and father to make a safe and healthy parenting plan for their child, whether that means making an adoption plan or preparing to raise the child that is theirs, together.
